Adam Smith-Neale faces a race for recovery in time for the 2019 BDO World Championship after breaking his leg in three places.

Smith-Neale suffered the freak injury whilst in Italy for a BDO tournament and underwent a successful operation on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old has been drawn to face New Zealand's Mark McGrath in the Preliminary Round on his Lakeside debut, with reigning and two-time champion Glen Durrant awaiting the winner in Round One.

Winner of this year's World Masters as an 80/1 outsider, Smith-Neale insisted he will be at Lakeside regardless of the injury, tweeting: "I'll make Lakeside if it kills me."

Following Tuesday's operation, he added: "I have 20 pins and five plates in my leg should be able to come home Saturday and be walking in 3-4 weeks' time - bring on the Lakeside."

The Coventry thrower made his debut in the recent Grand Slam - where he suffered consecutive defeats to Michael Smith, Raymond van Barneveld and Krzysztof Ratajski.
