Krzysztof Ratajski became the first Polish player to lift a major televised title as he thrashed Mark McGeeney 6-1 to claim the 2017 Winmau World Masters crown in Bridlington on Wednesday.

Ratajski has enjoyed the best of both worlds in 2017, appearing in the BDO Lakeside Championship and producing a series of impressive displays on the PDC European Tour as a non-Tour Card holder.

The 40-year-old underlined his calibre by lifting one of the BDO's most prestigious titles in a tournament which has been an ever-present on the calendar since 1974.

Ratajski came through a Last 32 clash with Richard Veenstra 3-1 before defeating Scotland's Alan Soutar in straight sets to reach the Quarter-Finals.

There, he dethroned reigning and back-to-back World Masters champion Glen Durrant with a superb 4-2 victory, before thrashing Cameron Menzies 5-1 to book his place in the final.

Having gone down 6-3 to Durrant in last year's final, McGeeney was hoping to go one step further but found himself on the receiving end a of a nerveless display from the former PDC World Cup star.

Both players appeared jaded on stage after a gruelling day of darts, but it was Ratajski who raced into a four sets to one lead at the interval.

Ratajski continued his dominance after the restart by taking set six, before following up double nine in the first leg of the seventh set with double 16 in the second to secure the £25,000 top prize.

Number one seed McGeeney had defeated Adrian Frim, Neil Duff, Martin Phillips and Gabriel Clemens en route to the final, but ultimately ran out of steam at the crucial time.

Elsewhere, Lorraine Winstanley also picked up her first major singles title as she overcame Australia's Corrine Hammond 5-2 in the Ladies' final.

Winstanley, who is married to former PDC professional Dean, began her run with a 4-0 whitewash of Rachna David before edging out Anastasia Dobromyslova 4-3 and dispatching Tricia Wright 4-2 to reach the final.

There, she produced a composed display of finishing to wrap up a five legs to two victory and scoop the £3,000 winner's cheque.
