Gerwyn Price keen to play pantomime villain in the 2018 Premier League

Gerwyn Price admits he thrives from having the boo boys on his back and says he is happy to embrace the role of pantomime villain in his debut Premier League season.

Price is one of four debutants in this year's Premier League, having been rewarded for a landmark 2017 which saw him reach the final of both the UK Open and World Cup of Darts.

The former Rugby Union player has taken two points from his opening three fixtures, twice coming from 5-1 down to earn draws with Peter Wright and Daryl Gurney.

Price's tournament average of 93.15 is the lowest of the ten players after three weeks of competition and the world number 12 admits he is frustrated with his level of performance thus far.

"I'm just waiting to play well," Price told Live Darts. "I've played in the PDC for four years and I think in the Premier League I'm probably playing the worst darts I've ever played.

"I'm playing badly but I'm picking up points so hopefully I can play well and pick up a few more.

"Sometimes I think I'm trying a bit too hard but one good week and one good run could just give me a little kick and I'll be alright.

"Beforehand and when I'm on the stage I don't feel like I'm under pressure but maybe I'm overthinking, I don't know but it's just not happening up there.

"Hopefully this week will be different and I'll pick up two points rather than one."

Price faces a huge clash against Mensur Suljovic in Berlin on Thursday as the bottom two in the table collide in the tournament's first ever visit to the darting hotspot of Germany.

Austria's Suljovic is the first German-speaking player ever to feature in this elite competition and is set for a rapturous reception in front of a 12,000 capacity crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Price, however, insists he is relishing the prospect of taking on the home favourite and will be spurred on by any torment he may receive from the partisan crowd.

"Sometimes I prefer the crowd against me rather than with me, it spurs me on," added Price.

"Towards the end of the game [against Gurney] I could hear the crowd booing me on the doubles and they ended up going in.

"I played in Glasgow against Gary and had the crowd against me and I seemed to play a bit better.

"Whenever I play against Max Hopp or another of the Germans on the European Tour, the crowd are always against me and I seem to rise to that.

"I prefer that atmosphere so hopefully the Germans are on my back!"
