Simon Whitlock tips Gerwyn Price to bounce back following Premier League Darts elimination

Simon Whitlock has backed Gerwyn Price to make a swift return to form following his exit from the Premier League on Judgement Night.

Price bowed out of the competition in his debut season at the halfway stage, picking up just two points - the lowest tally in Premier League history.

The Welshman's fate was already sealed prior to his clash with Whitlock in Liverpool last week, which 'The Wizard' won 7-3 despite an average of just 81.94.

Whitlock finished bottom of the Premier League in 2014 before returning to the competition four years later and the Australian says Price must maintain his self-belief in order to recapture his form as quickly as possible.

"Gerwyn's one of my mates, I'm watching him and seeing how bad he's throwing and that's not the Gerwyn Price I know," said Whitlock.

"Gerwyn's new at this and I do feel for him, he's got a long way to go.

"A bit of advice would be to not give up, stay strong and try and live your dream. We all aspire to make the Premier League and do well.

"The Premier League's tough, especially for people who haven't been there before, they don't realise how hard it is.

"I went out on a bad note and I've bounced back. You've just got to believe in yourself and play hard every week."

Whitlock's victory over Price ended a run of five games without a win as the World Grand Prix finalist retained his top four spot heading in to the second phase of the competition.

The Australian is one point clear of Gary Anderson in fifth but faces a formidable test against defending champion and league leader Michael van Gerwen in Sheffield on Thursday.

Whitlock, however, remains optimistic of his chances of securing a spot in May's play-offs at The O2, where he has fond memories of hitting a nine-darter against Andy Hamilton in the 2012 Semi-Finals before going on to finish runner-up.

"I'm looking pretty good again," added Whitlock. "I can build on last week and I'm pushing towards the top four again now.

"I've been sick for the last month but I'm getting over it. I was playing better when I was more sick!

"After the first three weeks, maybe 12 points would have been more what I was thinking, but I've avoided elimination and I'm up there close to the top four, so I'm doing alright.

"I'd love to be in the Play-Offs - that's my goal now. I've done the first section and avoided elimination and now I'm looking to make The O2. That's my dream.

"There's a long way to go, another seven more games, but if I can get another ten points then maybe I'll make the Play-Offs. I just take one week at a time now and enjoy it, because I love it."
