James Wilson’s first appearance in a European Tour final meant a “heart-stopping” 18-hour mad dash back to the UK.

The Huddersfield ace lost out to Michael van Gerwen 8-6 in the German Darts Championship decider in Hildesheim on Sunday night.

But that meant he had a race against time to be back in Barnsley by Monday lunchtime to qualify for the next European Tour events.

Remarkably, 'The Lethal Biscuit' produced the goods to make it on time and won his matches to make the next batch of Euro events.

"I knew that I need to get back as soon as possible so the plan was to get back quickly as soon as I'd thrown my last dart," Wilson told Live Darts.

"Typical of me, I made the final for the first time ever! Every round I got through I knew I had less time to get back.

"Even in the final I kept fighting back from 5-1 down to force it to go longer. I literally then had to rush out and get back to the UK.

"It was pretty heart-stopping to say the least. But maybe I should give myself that pressure in every tournament because it seemed to work!

"I really didn’t have time to think or practice much when I got back to Barnsley. It was straight in and straight into the qualifiers. But I got through and that's the main thing."

Wilson, 46, has shown more consistency this season and his excellent run in Hildesheim underlines his calibre as a key contender for ranking titles.

Now he wants to maintain that level of performance, adding: "I know that I’ve got that ability in my locker - it just doesn't come out enough.

"But I feel great right now and I've not really had time to dwell on the weekend yet. After the Euro qualifiers it's now the Players Championships.

"If anything it's a good time to hit form when the tournaments are coming at you thick and fast. I just need to keep this up now. That's the tough bit.

"But I gave Michael a really good game after a slow start. That lost it for me really. But I kept going and gave him a tough match. I have to build on that now."
