Ian White claimed his first PDC European Tour title at the 2018 Dutch Darts Championship courtesy of an 8-5 victory over Ricky Evans in the final in Maastricht.

Six years to the day he reached his first Euro Tour final, the Stoke star tasted success at the 62nd attempt, denying Evans a fairy-tale triumph.

White came in to the competition as the number three seed and produced a series of granite displays to clinch the £25,000 title and become the third first-time winner on the European Tour this year.

White began the final day with a 6-2 victory over Mervyn King with a 99.6 average in the Last 16 before thrashing fellow Stoke ace Adrian Lewis 6-1 with another 99 average.

In the Semi-Finals he then defied a 100 average from second seed Peter Wright - who had been installed as tournament favourite since the shock early exit of Michael van Gerwen - to record a 7-4 win with six 180s to his name.

White began the final with a 14-darter on tops before Evans replied with a 13-darter on double 16 to level.

Evans then hit the front with double ten, and after the duo traded 180s in leg four, White took out 81 to square it up once more.

The pair exchanged the next two legs before 'Diamond' punished one missed dart at tops from his opponent with a 96 checkout to move 4-3 ahead.

The 48-year-old then went two clear, and though Evans hit back to close the gap, White soon restored daylight with a 14-darter on double ten for 6-4.

An error-ridden eleventh leg saw both players squander multiple darts at doubles before White eventually posted double one to go further clear.

Evans followed up a maximum with tops in the proceeding leg to keep his hopes alive, but White duly sealed the deal with a 63 finish on tops.

Evans had enjoyed a spectacular run to his first European Tour final, having previous failed to make it beyond the Last 16 stage.

The former World Youth finalist, who won the hearts of the crowd and millions worldwide with his viral 'baby shark' walk-on, defeated giant-killer William O'Connor in the Last 16 before going on to edge out Joe Cullen - who missed three match darts in the deciding leg.

The Kettering thrower then landed five 180s on the way to a 7-5 defeat of Ritchie Edhouse in the Semi-Finals.

Edhouse also broke new ground in Maastricht, reaching his first PDC ranking Semi-Final with wins over James Wade and Kyle Anderson along the way.
