Stephen Bunting thrashed a struggling Michael Smith 6-0 in the Second Round of the Dutch Masters in Zwolle on Saturday, while Cameron Menzies sent Dave Chisnall crashing out.

The battle between the two St Helens stars saw Bunting record a blistering 106 average as he swept aside the Premier League star - who has been struggling with Pleurisy in recent weeks.

"I think that's probably the best I've ever played," admitted Bunting, who restricted Smith to just two darts at doubles in the entire match.

"I truly believe I am playing better than I ever have done in my life.

"It's taken me a long time to get back to being comfortable playing in front of these amazing crowds, and long may it continue."

Menzies produced the stand-out performance of the afternoon session as he knocked out eighth seed Chisnall 6-4.

The Scottish star fired in three 180s as he progressed to the final day of a European Tour event for the first time.

Both players held throw in a tight opening seven legs before Menzies broke the Chisnall throw to go within a leg of victory at 5-3.

The Challenge Tour star then missed match darts before getting the job done in the following leg with a 90 finish and will now face Kyle Anderson in round three.

"It's an amazing feeling to reach the final day of a European Tour event for the first time," said Menzies.

"When luck's going your way, you need to make the most of it and ride the waves of success.

"I've known Dave for a long time, he’s a great guy and a great player so to beat him on this stage is a proud moment for me."

Elsewhere, Krzysztof Ratajski toppled Dutch crowd favourite Jelle Klaasen 6-2 to claim his first European Tour win of 2018.

Klaasen began brightly by opening up a two-leg lead before Ratajski reeled off six straight legs to seal his place in Sunday's Last 16.

Home hero Michael van Gerwen kick-started his quest for a fifth consecutive Dutch Masters title with a 6-0 whitewash of Terry Jenkins.

The world number one, a winner of three European Tour titles in 2018, punished nine missed darts at doubles an average of just 81 from 'The Bull' as he cruised through.

World number 16 Darren Webster fired in three 180s en route to a 6-4 win over Steve Beaton to set up a show-down with Van Gerwen.

Kyle Anderson secured a comfortable 6-3 victory over Ian White in the final game of the afternoon session to continue his quest for a maiden European Tour title, producing a stunning 170 checkout along the way.

Peter Wright averted a potential upset as he dispatched James Wilson 6-4 with high checkouts of 131 and 116, while Gerwyn Price kept Welsh hopes alive in the tournament thanks to a tense 6-5 triumph over Dragutin Horvat.

The Premier League star landed a 110 checkout to level the match at 3-3 and took control to go 5-3 up, but eventually survived a match dart to see off the German qualifier.

Simon Whitlock earned a hard-fought 6-4 win over Jan Dekker, fending off a comeback from the Dutchman from 4-1 to parity by winning the final two legs.

Mensur Suljovic underlined his battling qualities with a 6-5 win over Josh Payne, while Daryl Gurney posted an impressive 102.06 average as he defeated Cristo Reyes 6-4.

Mervun King staved off a comeback from Ryan Joyce as he eventually wrapped up a 6-5 win, having seen the Newcastle debutant peg back from 5-1 down to just 5-4 behind.

Jermaine Wattimena raised the roof in Zwolle with a 6-3 victory over seventh seed Joe Cullen, pulling clear by reeling off three consecutive legs from three apiece.

Kim Huybrechts coasted to a 6-2 victory over veteran Wayne Jones with a high checkout of 149 to his name, as James Richardson recorded a 6-3 victory over 14th seed John Henderson to reach the final day of action in his first European Tour appearance of the year.
