Michael van Gerwen secured a record-equalling fourth European Championship title courtesy of an 11-7 victory over Rob Cross in the final in Hasselt on Sunday.

The world number one swept through the field to successfully retain the £100,000 title at the Etihas Arena and match Phil Taylor's tally of four European Championship triumphs.

Van Gerwen survived two match darts from nine-dart hero Kyle Anderson in the Semi-Finals and went on to deny Cross a fairy-tale ending to his first appearance in a major final.

"It was a great final," said Van Gerwen, who saved his best until last with a 108.91 average in the final. "Rob kept putting me under pressure, I had to play well."

"He's only been on the block for a year and I've already played three finals against him.

"I'm really glad I won this one, the support has been great and it means a lot to me.

"Sometimes you need a little bit of luck but I don't care how I win trophies as long as I win them."

Van Gerwen began the day with a commanding 10-5 victory over Simon Whitlock, before coming through a pulsating Last Four clash with Anderson - who landed a magical nine-darter midway through the contest to scoop a £25,000 bonus.

The Australian, however, was left to rue two missed match darts in the deciding leg as MVG took out 76 to squeeze through.

It was Cross who drew first blood in the final by hitting double ten before Van Gerwen responded with a 104 checkout to level.

Cross them produced a majestic 140 checkout, and after Van Gerwen had replied with double eight, 'Voltage' hit double 16 to move 3-2 up at the first break.

A ten-dart leg from Van Gerwen was followed by a fourth 180 and double eight as he broke throw to hit the front, but only for Cross to check out 102 on the bullseye for a level game once again.

The duo went into the second interval inseparable at five apiece before Van Gerwen took the next two legs to establish daylight for the first time in the contest at 7-5.

Cross stopped the rot with double eight but MVG pulled clear again by winning the next three legs to move to within one of glory.

Cross took out 62 on tops to stay alive but could only delay the inevitable as Van Gerwen landed double to secure the title in front of a packed Belgian crowd.

"I had one flat session after the second break and it cost me," admitted Cross. "I've had a fantastic week and it's coming, I'm getting better slowly.

"I want to keep progressing and hopefully knock him off his pedestal soon."

Cross enjoyed a ruthless run to the final which included a 10-4 Quarter-Final win over Michael Smith and an 11-3 thrashing of an out of sorts Daryl Gurney in the Semi-Finals.

He now climbs to 24th in the PDC Order of Merit and is assured of a debut in November's Grand Slam of Darts at the expense of Adrian Lewis.
