Michael van Gerwen sees off Mensur Suljovic to claim European Darts Matchplay title

Van Gerwen denies Suljovic in a high quality final

Michael van Gerwen picked up his second European Tour title of 2017 at the European Matchplay in Hamburg following a 6-3 victory over Mensur Suljovic in the final on Sunday.

The world number one, who also guided Netherlands to World Cup glory last weekend, secured a 16th career European Tour triumph as he overcame the Austrian ace at the InselParkhalle.

Van Gerwen, appearing in his fourth final in six European events, averaged 102, hit four 180s and 60 per cent on the doubles in a clinical display to claim the £25,000 top prize.

"I came here to win," admitted Van Gerwen. "I was the huge favourite and it costs a lot of energy but I did it again.

"Mensur is a fantastic player, he's shown some character in the last few years. Austria and Germany can be proud of him.

"I just want to keep performing well and win as many tournaments as possible," he added.

Van Gerwen kick-started his run to the final with a 6-2 victory over John Henderson on Saturday, before defeating Mervyn King 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.

The reigning World Champion then fended off a Peter Hudson fightback from 5-0 down to 5-4 as he booked his place in the Semi-Finals - where he dispatched Michael Smith 6-3.

Van Gerwen began the final in brutal fashion, firing in a 136 checkout to take the opening leg.

Suljovic hit back with an 87 finish before MVG reeled off the next three legs to establish clear daylight between the two players.

Suljovic converted double eight to stop the rot, and after Van Gerwen had hit tops to move one away, 'The Gentle' crashed in a fanfare 164 finish to trail 5-3.

Van Gerwen, though, made no mistake in getting over the line as he followed up a 170 set up score with a 75 finish on tops to take the title.

Suljovic's run to a second consecutive European Tour final saw him defeat Dirk van Duijvenbode and Daryl Gurney in last-leg deciders, before overcoming Dave Chisnall and Cristo Reyes 6-3.

Reyes had enjoyed a fine run to his first European Tour Semi-Final, notably recording a first ever win over Peter Wright in the Last 16 after 'Snakebite' had missed two match darts.

Hudson was the weekend's surprise package as he defeated Brendan Dolan, Kim Huybrechts and Alan Norris to win through to his first European Tour Quarter-Final.
