The 2018 European Matchplay reaches its climax in Hamburg on Sunday as the 16 remaining hopefuls bid to be claim the ninth European Tour silverware of the season.

European Tour history was rewritten on Saturday as Michael van Gerwen ended the five-year wait for a nine-dart finish in his 6-2 win over Ryan Joyce.

Van Gerwen, the defending champion, finally broke the 'Curse of Ross Smith' and now has his sights set on a sixth Euro Tour triumph of the year to culminate a memorable weekend.

His next test comes in the shape of multiple major champion Robert Thornton - the man who defeated him in the final of the 2015 World Grand Prix.

Thornton is appearing in the final day of a European Tour event for the first time in more than 18 months after seeing off Rene Eidams and James Wilson.

Reigning World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney had to survive match darts from Robert Marijanovic in his opener and will be hoping for a smoother passage to the next round when he faces Stephen Bunting.

Bunting has two Players Championship Semi-Finals to his name this season and dug deep to edge out Darius Labanauskas in a deciding leg on Saturday.

World number 11 Ian White, last Wednesday's Players Championship 16 winner, steps up his quest for glory with a tricky clash against world number 14 Darren Webster.

Joe Cullen, the number five seed, aims to end the run of Justin Pipe - who has knocked out Vincent van der Voort and Simon Whitlock en route to this stage.

Former UK Open finalist Gerwyn Price comes up against dangerous debutant Jason Lowe - who has already put paid to the hopes of Keegan Brown and Jonny Clayton in last-leg shoot-outs.

William O'Connor's reward for his Second Round scalp of Rob Cross is a show-down against Belgian ace Kim Huybrechts, whose best run on the European Tour this season saw him reach the Semi-Finals of the Dutch Masters in May.

Jelle Klaasen, conqueror of second seed Michael Smith in the Last 32, looks to continue his resurgent run by dispatching in-form Andy Boulton, who finds himself in the Last 16 of a European Tour event for the second time this season.

Mensur Suljovic, last weekend's Danish Open champion, steps up his pursuit of successive Euro Tour titles when he faces Paul Rowley - a player appearing at this stage of a Euro Tour event for the first time following wins over Darren Johnson and Mervyn King.

The action gets underway from midday, with Third Round and Quarter-Final matches to be contested over the best of 11 legs, Semi-Finals best of 13 legs and the final best of 15.
