Steffen Siepmann stuns Joe Cullen as Van Gerwen makes imperious start to German Masters title defence

Siepmann consoles Cullen

Steffen Siepmann continued his dream European Tour debut with a 6-5 victory over Joe Cullen to reach the Last 16 of the German Masters in Jena on Sunday, while Michael van Gerwen produced a stunning display to defeat John Michael.

Siepmann, one of four Host Nation qualifiers, followed up his First Round win over Andrew Gilding by dumping out last weekend's Players Championship event winner Cullen at the Sparkassenarena.

The German survived one missed match dart from Cullen as he recovered from 2-0 down with three ton-plus checkouts in claiming a memorable scalp.

Reigning champion Van Gerwen kicked off his title defence with a 6-1 rout of Greece's John Michael, averaging 110 and closing out victory with a sublime 136 checkout.

Peter Wright, who won the first European Tour title of 2017 in Hildesheim, made a solid start in his quest for a second title as he defeated Mark Webster 6-3.

Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld dug deep to seal his spot in Monday's Third Round with a 6-4 victory over European Tour event winner Alan Norris.

Van Barneveld will take on Kim Huybrechts after the Belgian ace wrapped up a commanding 6-2 victory over Sweden's Daniel Larsson with a superb 145 checkout.

Austria's Mensur Suljovic also came through a last leg decider to book his place in the Third Round, beating Jamie Lewis 6-5 with a notable checkout of 104.

Cristo Reyes held his nerve with crucial finishes of 113 and 120 in edging out Mervyn King to confirm another show-down with man of the moment MVG.

Jelle Klaasen ripped up the form book as he battled through the pain barrier to knock out recent ProTour event winner Daryl Gurney 6-4, while James Wade prevailed in the clash of the multiple major champions as he overcame Robert Thornton 6-3.

UK Open runner-up Gerwyn Price silenced the partisan German crowd with a high checkout of 121 in ending the hopes of Max Hopp for the loss of just one leg.

Simon Whitlock battled back from 3-1 down to see off Welshman Jonny Clayton 6-4, while Michael Smith charged into the Last 16 courtesy of a 6-1 rout of Dragutin Horvat with a 98.5 average.

Rowby-John Rodriguez pulled off a terrific 6-4 victory over seeded star Benito van de Pas with high checkouts of 117 and 123, while Ian White was another significant casualty as he squandered a 5-3 lead in a last-leg loss to comeback king Jefffrey de Graaf.

Australia ace Kyle Anderson continued to make up for lost time as he recorded a 6-4 victory over Steve West, while former Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting seized upon crucial missed doubles to deny youngster Ted Evetts 6-4.
