Steve Lennon recorded an emphatic 6-0 whitewash of Robert Thornton in the opening round of the 2018 German Darts Open in Saarbrücken on Friday as Max Hopp delighted the German crowd with a 6-1 rout of Zoran Lerchbacher.

Ireland's Lennon underlined his reputation as one of the sport's most impressive emerging talents as he brushed aside the multiple major winner to reach the Last 32 of the season's third European Tour event.

The 24-year-old averaged just shy of 97 as he powered his way to victory, sealing the deal in spectacular style with a 167 checkout.

Home favourite Hopp maintained his superb run of resurgence as he dropped just one leg against Austria's Lerchbacher.

Hopp, a quarter-finalist in the recent German Grand Prix, produced a signature 161 checkout and hit six of his ten attempts at doubles, averaging 99.5 as he set up a show-down with defending champion Peter Wright on Saturday.

Paul Nicholson registered his first European Tour win in almost a year as he overcame Stockport's Nathan Aspinall 6-2 to set up a meeting with last year's runner-up Benito van de Pas.

Scottish ace Cameron Menzies reeled off five consecutive legs from 4-1 down to knock out multiple major finalist Terry Jenkins in the afternoon session.

James Wade began his bid to reach a third consecutive European Tour Semi-Final with a routine 6-2 win over Poland's Tytus Kanik, hitting three 180s and converting 50 per cent of his shots at a double.

Luke Humphries recorded the highest average of the First Round (103.63) in a highly impressive 6-3 victory over Belgium's Ronny Huybrechts, missing just two darts at doubles in the entire contest and landing a high checkout of 145.

Former World Championship finalist Kirk Shepherd rolled back the years as he thrashed Plymouth's Simon Stevenson 6-1 with 55 per cent on the doubles and a high finish of 106.

Sweden's Daniel Larsson became the first man to book his place in Sunday's Third Round after a 6-2 win over Jan Dekker before being handed a bye following the withdrawal of Simon Whitlock through illness.

Steve West averaged a solid 99.23 and landed four 180s in a 6-2 triumph over Matthew Edgar, while Dutch debutant Maik Kuivenhoven enjoyed a straightforward 6-1 win over Host Nation qualifier Tobias Muller.

Former Lakeside finalist Danny Noppert produced a deadly display of finishing as he hit six of his nine attempts at doubles and took out 124 on his way to a 6-4 victory over Richard North as he moved through to face Michael van Gerwen.

Jermaine Wattimena took full advantage of an out of sorts Keegan Brown - who averaged just 61 - as he raced to a 6-0 whitewash in the final match of the evening.

World Youth Champion Dimitri van den Bergh averaged 98 and put the gloss on a 6-3 win over William O'Connor with a stunning 140 checkout.

Spain's Jose Justicia capitalised on 25 missed darts at doubles from Luke Woodhouse as he closed out a 6-4 win, while Germany's Rene Eidams safely saw off Ricky Williams by the same scoreline and veteran Alan Tabern dispatched Dragutin Horvat 6-4 with a 98.8 average and a high checkout of 116.
