Adrian Lewis, Max Hopp and Paul Nicholson all began their 2018 Gibraltar Trophy campaigns with whitewash wins in Round One at the Victoria Stadium on Friday.

The opening day of the season's seventh European Tour event saw the 32 qualifiers battle it out for places in Saturday's Second Round alongside the top 16 seeds from the ProTour Order of Merit.

Two-time World Champion Lewis cruised to a 6-0 rout of teenage debutant Clayton Otton - one of four Host Nation representatives in the field.

Lewis landed a high checkout of 130 and six doubles from nine attempts as he thrashed the former Gibraltar Youth champion.

Hopp, winner of the German Open earlier this season, was ruthless in thrashing 2005 World Championship finalist Mark Dudbridge without dropping a leg.

The German ace afforded 'Flash' just two darts at doubles in the entire contest as he ran out a comfortable winner with a 100.2 average and 66 percent on the doubles.

Nicholson continued his impressive resurgence with a demolition of home hopeful Anthony Lopez.

The former Players Champion and World Cup finalist allowed Lopez no darts at doubles as he coasted to victory, sealing the deal with a 116 checkout.

Elsewhere, Challenge Tour leader Michael Barnard continued his superb run of form by knocking out World Masters champion Krzysztof Ratajski 6-3 in the opening match of the tournament.

Barnard averaged 95.8 as he punished 13 missed darts at doubles from Poland's top-ranked star.

Lithuania's Darius Labanauskas, a recent BDO World Trophy quarter-finalist, landed six 180s in a high quality 6-4 win over Jeffrey de Graaf - who registered four maximums of his own.

Northern Ireland's Brendan Dolan battled his way to a 6-4 victory over James Wilson to set up a Second Round show-down with his recent World Cup team-mate Daryl Gurney.

Stoke's Andy Boulton was the stand-out performer of the afternoon session as he edged out Ritchie Edhouse in a deciding leg with a 99 average and a high checkout of 134.

Belgium's Mike De Decker came from behind to defeat Matt Padgett in a last-leg decider after the left-hander had missed a match dart in leg ten.

Spanish star Cristo Reyes fended off a spirited revival from Robert Thornton to close out a dramatic 6-5 victory.

Thornton had come from 4-1 down to lead 5-4, but only for Reyes to produce a timely 127 checkout on the bullseye to force a decider before clinching victory with a 14-darter.

Chris Dobey pulled off an impressive 6-2 win over Dutch Masters runner-up Steve Lennon, averaging 97 and sealing the win with a 13-darter.

Vincent van der Voort prevailed in the battle of the former UK Open finalists as he overcome Welshman Barrie Bates 6-3 with a solid 96 average.

Ross Smith, whose nine-darter in this event five years ago remains the only perfect leg in European Tour history, recorded a shock 6-3 victory over former Gibraltar Trophy finalist Jamie Lewis.

Adam Huckvale marked only his second appearance on the European Tour with a memorable 6-3 defeat of former Lakeside World Champion Richie Burnett, converting 60 percent of his attempts at doubles.

Steve West landed four 180s and defied a 150 checkout from Toni Alcinas as he progressed with a 6-3 victory.

Dutch talent Jermaine Wattimena powered past local qualifier Tony Dawkins for the loss of just one leg, while Germany's Hannes Schnier put paid to the hopes of Roy Asquez with a 6-2 triumph.
