Jermaine Wattimena sent defending champion Michael Smith crashing out of the Gibraltar Trophy at the Second Round stage on Saturday, while Paul Nicholson continued his fine form with victory over Dave Chisnall.

Dutch ace Wattimena held off multiple fightbacks from the Premier League finalist to close out a dramatic deciding leg victory and move through to the Last 16 at the Victoria Stadium.

Wattimena established a 3-1 lead before Smith produced finishes of 90 and 60 to restore parity, though 'The Machine Gun' took the next two legs to move to the verge pf victory.

Smith, however, replied with tops and a stunning 142 checkout to force a decider, but only for Wattimena to clean up 72 and get over the line.

Former Players Champion Nicholson reached the final day of a European Tour event for the first time this season after an impressive 6-4 win over Chisnall.

Nicholson coasted into a 5-2 lead before 'Chizzy' replied with tops and a 102 checkout to close in, but the former World Cup finalist sealed the deal with a solid 13-darter.

Ian White was another of the seven seeds to bite the dust in Round Two as he went down 6-4 to German star Max Hopp in the afternoon session.

The German Open champion landed four 180s and a high checkout of 146 as he maintained his unbeaten record over the Stoke veteran.

Andy Boulton followed up his impressive First Round display with a 6-4 scalp of Stephen Bunting to set up a Third Round show-down with top seed Michael van Gerwen.

Van Gerwen reeled off four consecutive legs from 4-2 down to deny his close friend Vincent van der Voort, ending with an average of 107.8 to his compatriot's 102.4 in a match which saw both players produce four maximums.

Reigning World Champion Rob Cross overturned deficits of 3-0, 4-1 and 5-2 to edge out Spain's Cristo Reyes in a last-leg decider.

Cross produced a high checkout of 116 and took out 68 for a 15-darter in the decider to shrug off a late 180 from 'The Spartan'.

James Wade dug deep to wrap up a 6-5 victory over Ross Smith as he came from 5-3 down to seal his progression despite 17 missed darts at doubles and a 100 percent finishing rate from his opponent.

Two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis advanced to the Last 16 of a European Tour event for the first time this season following a 6-3 victory over German Masters champion Mensur Suljovic.

Lewis landed four 180s and a high checkout of 122 as he confirmed a clash with Wade on Sunday afternoon.

Steve West pulled off a terrific fightback from 3-0 down to defeat Darren Webster 6-5 with the aid of a brilliant 124 checkout in the final leg.

Chris Dobey defied doubles trouble to dispatch Mervyn King 6-3, missing 24 darts at a finish to King's twelve in a scrappy affair.

Daryl Gurney claimed three consecutive legs from 4-3 down to deny his World Cup team-mate Brendan Dolan in a contest which saw both players fire in four 180s.

Joe Cullen was in ruthless form as he thrashed Lithuania's Darius Labanauskas 6-1 with an average just shy of 108 to set up a meeting with Nicholson.

Austrian Open champion Jonny Clayton whitewashed Austrian qualifier Hannes Schnier with 66 percent on the doubles, while his Wales World Cup partner Gerwyn Price safely saw off Belgium's Mike de Decker 6-2.

Simon Whitlock thrashed Adam Huckvale 6-1 despite a 154 checkout from his opponent, while world number two Peter Wright averaged 100.6 and produced a high checkout pf 138 in a comfortable 6-2 win over Challenge Tour event winner Michael Barnard.
