Mighty Michael van Gerwen claimed a fifth European Tour title of 2018 at the Gibraltar Trophy as he defeated Adrian Lewis 8-3 in the final on Sunday.

The world number one continued his emphatic dominance of the European circuit by securing the £25,000 top prize at the Victoria Stadium, taking his career tally of European Tour titles to 25.

The Dutch ace denied Lewis his first ranking title for more than a year thanks to a ruthless display in the final, averaging 108 and hitting 66 per cent of his attempts at doubles.

Van Gerwen had begun the day with a 6-2 victory over Stoke's Andy Boulton in the Last 16 before dispatching Austrian Open champion Jonny Clayton by the same scoreline in the Quarter-Finals.

He then hit five 180s and averaged 105.2 in a 7-4 win over Steve West to deny the 43-year-old a place in his first European Tour final.

Van Gerwen took the opening leg of the final on double 16 before doubling his lead in majestic fashion with a 132 checkout.

Double ten saw 'Mighty Mike' move further ahead before Lewis got off the mark in style with an impressive ten-darter in leg four.

A 13-darter on tops saw the Dutch regain a three-leg cushion, and after Lewis missed four darts at doubles in the next, MVG landed double two to make it 5-1.

A 76 finish continued the procession for Van Gerwen, and though Lewis stopped the rot with double ten, the Premier League champion replied with double six to move within a leg of victory.

Lewis rallied again with a 180 and an 86 checkout to keep the match alive, but only for Van Gerwen to clean up 84 for an 11-darter to seal the deal.

"I'm really happy with my performance," said Van Gerwen. "I know what Adrian is capable of, he's a phenomenal player and one of the best in the world.

"You always need to make sure you're focused against him.

"I'm going to take a break from the ProTours now and concentrate on the Europeans before the Matchplay."

Lewis was appearing in his first European Tour final for six years after enjoying a long-awaited return to form on The Rock.

The two-time World Champion began the final day with a thrilling deciding leg victory over James Wade in which he averaged 105.97 to the left-hander's 105.6.

He then dispatched world number two Peter Wright 6-3 with 55 per cent on the doubles, punishing eight crucial misses from the Scotsman.

Lewis completed his run to the final by edging out a resurgent Paul Nicholson 7-6, landing a 14-darter in the decider after 'The Asset' had produced back-to-back bullseye finishes of 121 and 128.

"Obviously I'm disappointed not to win but fair play to Michael there," said Lewis. "I missed a couple of shots early doors and he does what he does, that's why he's world number one."

Lewis' run sees him climb back to 17th in the main Order of Merit and secures his place in the European Championship later this year.

Nicholson enjoyed a magnificent run to his first European Tour Semi-Final in five years as he continued his remarkable resurgence in 2018.

The former Players Champion came through two nail-biting last-leg deciders on Sunday, starting with a 6-5 defeat of Joe Cullen, in which he survived three match darts.

Nicholson then held off the challenge of Gerwyn Price to close out another 6-5 triumph after the Welshman had squandered six match darts in the final leg.

World Champion Rob Cross fell at the Quarter-Final hurdle at the hands of West - who took out 81 for an 11-darter in the deciding leg.
