Gerwyn Price became the first Welsh winner of a PDC major at the 2018 Grand Slam as he defeated Gary Anderson 16-13 in one of the most controversial finals the sport has ever witnessed.

Price came from 10-5 down to defeat Mensur Suljovic 16-12 in the Semi-Finals before recovering from 11-8 behind to deny Anderson a fourth major title of the year.

The match was shrouded in controversy as Anderson reacted angrily to Price's passionate celebrations, with the pair exchanging words and colliding at the oche.

Price, however, held firm to get over the line and secure the £110,000 title, becoming the first name on the Eric Bristow Trophy.

"I was chasing the game all the way through but I knew if I put him under pressure he would crack and he did," said Price.

"I knew that he doesn't like the way I play. My game is my game, he just needs to concentrate on his own. I've won the tournament and I'm over the moon."

"Maybe 18 months ago I was scared of the top four or top eight, but now I'm turning up to win these tournaments.

"I'm the first person to win the Eric Bristow Trophy and that means a huge amount to me - it's something nobody can ever take from me," he added.

Price kicked off the final with a 120 checkout, and after finding himself 4-2 down following a three-leg burst from Anderson, the Welshman took out 137 to stop the rot.

Anderson, though, extended his advantage to 7-4 before seeing his rival reel off four straight legs to regain the edge at 8-7.

Anderson had expressed his discontent towards Price midway through the 15th leg but appeared refocused after the interval, securing four in a row to go 11-8 up with the aid of finishes of 72, 84 and 144.

Price hit back with finishes of 70 and 78 before a 130 checkout saw him move within touching distance at 12-11 behind.

Double ten saw Anderson move 13-11 ahead, but Price again dug in to win four successive legs as he turned the game on its head once again to move a leg away from glory.

As 'The Ice Man' celebrated in leg 28, Anderson appeared to push his opponent in an attempt to clear the oche for his throw, sparking another flash-point between the two players.

Nonetheless, Price returned to seal the victory on tops in the following leg, erasing the memory of defeats in the UK Open and World Cup of Darts finals to claim big-stage glory for the first time.

The defeat saw Anderson miss out on the Grand Slam title for a second time, following his loss in the 2011 final to Phil Taylor.

He had earlier ended Van Gerwen's reign as champion with a sensational 16-12 semi-final triumph, landing five ton-plus finishes to overcome the world number one.

"I played a very poor game," Van Gerwen told RTL7. "I was horribly irritated by myself, and he didn't play his best game also.

"Gary played ok - he did the right things at the right times and I couldn't answer that. I missed too many doubles here and there and I can only blame myself. It was just not good enough."
