Gerwyn Price captured his first European Tour title at the 2018 International Open courtesy of an 8-3 victory over Simon Whitlock in the final in Riesa.

Price, runner-up in April's Austrian Open, went a step further as he scooped the £25,000 top prize in the season's penultimate Euro Tour event.

The Welshman, who recently underwent surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon, recaptured the form which earned him a place in this year's Premier League as he brushed aside Whitlock in the final.

"I'm thrilled to win this tournament," said Price. "Every tournament you turn up and expect to win, thankfully I did today."

"When I was playing Premier League I was turning up every week and didn't want to be there.

"I've not played too bad in the last few weeks, I've just missed few doubles but I was better this weekend and actually won."

Price began the day with a dramatic 6-5 victory over Daryl Gurney in the Last 16, surviving three missed match darts from the Northern Irishman.

He then saw off in-form Ryan Searle 6-2 with a 101.6 average before holding his nerve in another last-leg decider - this time against Steve West as he prevailed 7-6 despite a missed match dart from West in the decider.

It was Whitlock who began the final with a break of throw on double nine before Price took the next two legs to go in front.

Whitlock then followed up a 180 with a 99 checkout before hitting a 171 and double 12 to nudge back ahead at 3-2.

Price, however, reeled off six consecutive legs to stun the Aussie and take the title, firing in finishes of 72 and 76 along the way and sealing the deal on double four for a 13-darter.

"Gerwyn was the best player in the final," admitted Whitlock. "Making the final is fantastic and I'm really proud to be here. I just love playing darts."

Whitlock was bidding to end a six-year wait for a European Tour title and secured his spot in the final with wins over Steve Beaton, James Richardson and and Danny Noppert.

Noppert enjoyed a fine run to his first European Tour Semi-Final as he secured a debut in both the World Grand Prix and European Championship next month.

West played through the pain barrier as he defied a persistent back problem to reach the Last Four with victories over Jonny Clayton and Adrian Lewis before being left to ponder what might have been.

The 2018 European Tour concludes in Gottingen with the European Darts Trophy from October 12-14, following which the 32-man field for the European Championship will be confirmed.
