Daryl Gurney secured his second major title at the 2018 Players Championship Finals with an 11-9 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the final in Minehead.

The Northern Irish star, who opened his account at the 2017 World Grand Prix, doubled his tally in style by ending MVG's three-year unbeaten run in the prestigious tournament.

The world number five began the day with a 10-2 rout of Chris Dobey in the Quarter-Finals before brushing aside Dutch ace Danny Noppert 11-3 in the Semi-Finals.

He then kept the defending champion at arm's length for much of a closely-contested final before reeling off three consecutive legs from 9-8 down to take the title, finishing 85 on the bullseye to prompt wild celebrations.

"I'm over the moon with that win, it means so much to me," said Gurney.

"That was the best bullseye I've ever hit in my life, I was determined to make sure we didn't go to a deciding leg and I was relieved to see it go in.

"I knew I was playing well, I was hitting everything in practice and after a sticky start I straightened up my throw and I grew in confidence from there.

"To win this tournament is an unbelievable feeling and I'm going to enjoy this moment."

The two heavy hitters could not be separated for 12 legs after consecutive holds of throw before MVG took out 88 to break and hit the front at 7-6.

Gurney responded with an immediate break back before taking out 64 to go back ahead, but a 68 finish followed by double one saw the Premier League champion wrestle back the upper-hand at 9-8.

Gurney recovered with an 88 checkout for parity once more, and then landed double 16 under immense pressure to move within a leg of glory.

With Van Gerwen breathing down his neck on 56 to force a decider, Gurney closed out the contest in style with an 85 checkout on the bullseye to clinch the £100,000 top prize.

Van Gerwen conceded: "I think he played phenomenally, especially his finishing.

"I let myself down, I broke his throw but after that I couldn't hit a treble.

"He played well but I didn't play my best today, all the credits to Daryl."

Van Gerwen had moved within touching distance of a fourth Players Championship Finals title in a row and a fifth in total by defeating rival Gary Anderson 11-9 in a thrilling Semi-Final.

The Dutch star averaged 102.6 and converted 11 of his 21 attempts at doubles, sealing the win with a classy 121 checkout to avenge his defeat to Anderson in last week's Grand Slam Semi-Finals.

The defeat in the final, however, was Van Gerwen's first in a major televised tournament final since the 2015 World Grand Prix, ending a run of 14 consecutive triumphs.
