Michael van Gerwen denied Scott Taylor a first PDC title with a 6-4 victory in the final of Players Championship Nine in Wigan on Saturday.

The world number stormed through the 128-man field to claim his ninth title of 2018 and secure the £10,000 top prize at the Robin Park Tennis Centre.

Van Gerwen has now won four of the five Players Championship events he has competed in this season and culminated a memorable week in which he also received Royal recognition in the Netherlands and claimed three points from his two Premier League matches in Manchester on Thursday.

"Overall I did a good job and I think I was a worthy champion today," said Van Gerwen.

"At the start of the day I played quite well although after that it got a bit sloppy, but a win is a win and it doesn't matter how you win.

"Scott did really well today so I want to say well done to him. It’s tough playing here, you have to play well every game.

"I want to add to my nine titles so far this year starting tomorrow," he added.

Van Gerwen began the day with a 6-2 victory over World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Lewis before brushing aside Darren Johnson for the loss of just one leg.

The Dutch superstar then dispatched Jermaine Wattimena 6-3 in the Last 32 with a 106 average before powering past Simon Whitlock 6-1 with a 101 average.

Van Gerwen saw off last weekend's Austrian Open champion Jonny Clayton in the Quarter-Finals and ended the run of James Wade with a 6-4 triumph in the Last Four.

Van Gerwen took the opening leg of the final before Bolton's Taylor hit back with an 11-darter to level.

The two-time World Champion landed double 18 in leg three before Taylor replied with double nine and the duo held throw in the next four legs to leave them locked level at four apiece.

A 13-darter handed MVG a 5-4 advantage and he wrapped up the win in style with a 132 checkout on the bullseye in the following leg.

World number 87 Taylor enjoyed the best day of his darting career so far as he reached his first senior PDC final to bolster his hopes of major tournament qualification this year.

He began the day with a 6-4 win over Belgium's Davy Van Baelen before brushing aside Wayne Jones with a commanding 6-1 triumph.

Taylor then defeated former Lakeside Champion Steve Beaton 6-4 and Steve West 6-2 to reach the Quarter-Finals - where he stunned UK Open champion Gary Anderson with a 6-4 scalp.

Taylor sealed his spot in the final courtesy of a 6-3 victory over another rank outsider - Jason Lowe - who reached the Semi-Finals of UK Open Qualifier Four in February.

Wade progressed to his fourth ranking Semi-Final of the season, while Adrian Lewis and Daryl Gurney bowed out at the Last Eight stage.
