Michael van Gerwen hits the jackpot with US Darts Masters glory in Las Vegas

Van Gerwen raises the trophy in Vegas

Michael van Gerwen claimed the inaugural US Darts Masters title courtesy of an 8-6 victory over Daryl Gurney in the final at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The two-time World Champion continued his emphatic dominance as he picked up his tenth World Series title title, denying Gurney a fairy-tale debut triumph.

Winner of last week's Shanghai Masters, Van Gerwen romped into the final for the loss of just one leg, thrashing Chris White 6-0, Dave Richardson 8-1 and Gerwyn Price 8-0.

He then battled back from 5-3 down to dash the hopes of 'Superchin' with a 101.3 average in the final.

"It feels fantastic," said Van Gerwen. "It's been such a long time since we've been to Vegas and I wanted to do something special here.

"This is great progression for darts worldwide and we can be happy for that.

"He had some great finishes and made it really difficult - I had to work really hard for this.

Van Gerwen, whose wife Daphne is expecting their first child, added: "This is nice to win but the biggest prize this year is I'm going to be a daddy in a couple of weeks."

Van Gerwen kicked off the final in style with a 124 checkout on the bullseye to clinch the opening leg, before doubling his lead courtesy of double 19.

Gurney, though, hit back with three legs on the spin to hit the front as he cleaned up 84 on the bullseye, followed by double 12 and double four in legs four and five.

He was then left to rue one missed dart at tops for a two-leg cushion as Van Gerwen took out 72 to get back on level terms.

Gurney, however, did edge back in front by virtue of a 62 finish and created further daylight with double ten to establish a 5-3 lead, but only for 'Mighty Mike' to turn the tide back in his favour.

The Dutchman's four-leg burst included a 174 score and double ten, followed by a 112 checkout, double 12, double 18 and a 92 finish.

Gurney stopped the rot with a crucial 120 checkout, but MVG made mo mistake in sealing the deal with a 98 checkout in the following leg.

"I ran out of steam at the end," admitted Gurney. "Michael needs to watch out because I'm only improving."

Having safely seen off Dennis Sayre in Round One, Gurney kick-started his dream run to the final on Saturday with a dramatic 8-7 victory over Peter Wright in the Quarter-Finals.

Wright fired in seven 180s and a high checkout of 156, but it was the Derry darter who held his nerve in the deciding leg to defy the odds.

He then reeled off seven consecutive legs from 4-1 down to to stun two-time World Champion Gary Anderson 8-4 in the Semi-Finals a short time later.

Gurney fired in six maximums and a 101.8 average, punishing just 26 per cent on the doubles from The Flying Scotsman.

Anderson had earlier gained revenge on Raymond van Barneveld after an 8-1 mauling in Shanghai last week as he ran out an 8-4 winner in the Quarter-Finals.

Price initially ended the run of 21-year-old Canadian talent Dawson Murschell with an 8-4 triumph.
