Michael van Gerwen was reduced to tears after being soaked with a drink prior to his walk-on at the World Darts Championship on Saturday.

Van Gerwen was preparing to take on Alan Tabern in the Second Round at Alexandra Palace, but his tournament began in unsavoury fashion after a member of the crowd threw a drink over the world number one in the walk-on area.

The perpetrator was immediately ejected from the arena by security staff and handed a lifetime ban.

Van Gerwen went on to win the game 3-1 with a 102.5 average, four 180s and 55% on the doubles to set up a Third Round encounter with Max Hopp.

Speaking about the pre-match incident, Van Gerwen said: "It has never happened to me before, I had two pints of drink thrown over my head.

"I didn't really know what to do because it was a new situation.

"I was so angry, but what can you do? The only thing I could do was change my shirt and wash my hands.

"It was quite difficult, I was a bit emotional but I'm glad I won this game.

"I never find an excuse, I never blame anything else, I still have to throw the darts at the board."

A PDC spokesman said: “The fan who threw the beer was removed from the premises. The PDC does not condone that sort of behaviour.”
