Dimitri van den Bergh became the latest new name on the PDC World Youth Championship trophy after a 6-3 win over Josh Payne in the final at Butlins Minehead on Sunday.

The Belgian star, 23, produced a sublime display as he averaged 101.2 with 6/10 on the doubles in the final to secure the £10,000 winner's cheque and deny Payne a place in next month's World Championship.

The pair had won through to the decider earlier in November when the last 64 faced off in the early rounds in Wigan.

Van den Bergh established a 2-0 lead courtesy of double top and double 16 before Payne landed a 180 and an 84 checkout to halve the deficit.

Van den Bergh hit tops in successive legs as he moved 4-1 up and countered a 108 finish from Payne with an outstanding 146 checkout to lead 5-2.

Payne hit double 16 to stay in the game, but Van den Bergh scored 177 and 150 before a third-dart double 18 sealed the title.

"It's unbelievable to win this title," said Van den Bergh. "It feels like a dream and it's absolutely amazing.

"Winning this says something about what may happen for me in the future. It's a step forward and there's a whole lot more to come for me.

"It's very important for me. Playing this tournament has prepared me well for the World Championship and whoever I play there will need to be ready."

Both players will receive a place in next year's Grand Slam of Darts, and while 'The Dream Maker' had already qualified for the World Championship, a third qualifying spot will now become available at Monday's PDPA Qualifier in Milton Keynes.
