The World Championship is the biggest international darts tournament in the world. Held annually at the Alexandra Palace in London, it offers more than £1million in prize money and features many of the world's top players.
It was introduced following a dispute in 1994 with the British Darts Organisation, which has run its own world championship since 1978.
The biggest of the PDC tournaments, it traditionally begins in late December, finishing in early January just as the BDO's version gets underway.
The tournament is currently sponsored by William Hill
and is now staged at the Alexandra Palace in London after being held the Circus Tavern in Purfleet for its first 14 years.
Known as the most popular event on planet darts, the tournament attracts fans from around the world to the 'peoples palace', often in fancy dress during the festive party period.
Phil Taylor has been crowned World Champion an incredible 16 times, but has suffered mixed fortunes at the new venue, winning the title twice since it moved to Ally Pally in 2008.
There have been many memorable matches contested in the history of the prestigious event, making it a gripping feast of darts over Christmas and New Year.
